Welcome to the Chair of Mixed Signal Circuit Design (MSC). The institute is located in the heart of Berlin not far from the Brandenburg Gate at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. The head of the institute is Prof. Friedel Gerfers. Research topics of the Mixed Signal Circuit Design institute are largely centered around the design of innovative ultra-low-power and high-speed analog & mixed signal circuits and systems. Of particular interest are the analog-digital co-design, data conversion techniques with an emphasis on robustness, energy efficiency as well as silicon area / cost reduction, mixed signal error- and mismatch estimation algorithms, (self)-adaptive calibration techniques as well as highly scalable DSP-based design techniques implemented in standard CMOS and BiCMOS processes. The field of application spans from high-speed GS/s integrated circuits (IC) for wireless infrastructure applications (such as LTE base-stations), over energy-efficient DSP-based transceivers for optical applications (such as Silicon Photonics) to ultra-low power sensor readout systems for optical and biomedical applications as well as the design of ultra-robust automotive integrated circuits. Energy-efficient (RF-) transceiver architectures, energy harvesting approaches for mobile/hand-held devices and the large field of Internet-of-Things (IoT) technologies are additional key research topics of the MSC institute.
In order to enable correct-by-design implementation approaches on the one hand as well as to speed-up the overall IC design process on the other hand, the institute performs also research in the field of semiconductor design flow, design automation as well as CAD tool development down to 14nm FinFet technologies.

Students benefit from the connections of the chair to the industry and to other research institutes. Current thesis offers include works on the aforementioned topics in collaboration with partners such as e.g. the IHP in Frankfurt (Oder) or NXP in Hamburg. For more details see Thesis Offers. New perspectives beyond a BSc. or MSc. thesis can be found at Jobs & Careers.
