Highly-scalable (hybrid-) beam-forming RF-receiver architecture – ScaledRX

Future wireless technologies and applications such as 5G, Vehicle-to-X (V2X), Internet-of-Things (IoT) or 802.11 communication systems and successors are required to reliably handle huge data volumes. Massive Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output (MIMO) Beam-Forming (BF) antennas will become an essential element for future wireless communication. BF summation can be done in the analog or digital domain. In this project the summation will be realized in the analog domain with a Wideband Sub-Sampling-Based Beam-Forming Summation Track and Hold (SSBS-TH).

Furthermore, this project extends the state-of-the-art with multi-terminal MIMO sampling mixer, individual channel gain tuning and summation, mixed-signal beam-forming control. This also enable much higher microwave and mm-wave frequencies (24 GHz to 60 GHz) and larger bandwidths, as well as simpler calibration methods for enabling high-speed data conversion directly on the front-end chip.
